Astrantia major ‘Midnight Owl’ is a striking perennial valued for its bold umbels of deep burgundy-purple flowers, each encircled by silvery bracts that extend the impact of its display. Rising above clumps of attractive, lobed green foliage, the blooms add height, texture, and a sense of refinement to borders or shaded garden spaces. The long-lasting flowers are equally effective in the garden or as part of cut flower arrangements, offering strong visual contrast through their dark, velvety tones.

This variety flourishes in moist, humus-rich soil and is best suited to partial shade, though it can tolerate sunnier positions if conditions remain consistently damp. It provides a reliable succession of blooms from early to late summer, especially when regularly deadheaded, and is known for drawing in bees and other pollinators. With its low-maintenance needs and rich colouring, Astrantia major ‘Midnight Owl’ is both decorative and practical in mixed planting schemes.
