The ‘Black Cascade’ is a unique cultivar of blackberry known for its cascading growth habit, making it suitable for patio containers or hanging baskets. It’s characterized by several notable features:
Cascading Growth: This variety grows in a trailing or cascading manner, making it perfect for containers or hanging baskets. Its stems arch and trail downward, creating an attractive display.
Fruit Production: ‘Black Cascade’ produces large, sweet-tasting berries on thornless stems. It follows a primocane fruiting habit, meaning it bears fruit on one-year-old canes. This trait makes it easier to manage and allows it to produce fruit in its first year.
Planting Recommendations: It’s suggested to plant one plant per 35-40cm (14-16in) basket. However, for a more abundant display, you can initially plant three plants per basket in the first year.
Yield: When mature, each ‘Black Cascade’ plant can yield up to 2.8lbs (1.3kg) of fruit.
Size: At maturity, the dimensions are approximately 30cm (12in) in height and can spread up to 45cm (18in).
Fruiting Season: This variety is a summer-into-autumn fruiting blackberry, providing a harvest over 3 or 4 months. It produces small white or pale pink flowers before fruiting.
Compact Form: ‘Black Cascade’ has a more compact growth form compared to traditional blackberry varieties, making it ideal for smaller spaces and container gardening.
To optimize its growth and fruiting potential, ensure proper sunlight, watering, and occasional feeding with suitable fertilizers. Pruning the older canes after fruiting can encourage new growth and further fruit production in subsequent years.
