Dicentra formosa, commonly known as Western Bleeding Heart, is a perennial native to the Pacific Northwest and West Coast of North America. It features finely divided, fern-like foliage that forms a graceful mound and arching sprays of heart-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red, or white. Its delicate blooms add charm and colour to shaded garden areas, while the textured foliage provides structure and interest throughout the growing season. The flowers attract pollinators, supporting biodiversity in woodland or shaded borders.

This species thrives in moist, well-drained soils and prefers partial to full shade. After blooming in spring, the plant may go dormant during hot summer months and re-emerges in autumn, making it ideal for naturalistic or woodland plantings. Its low-maintenance habit, ornamental foliage, and attractive flowers make Dicentra formosa a reliable choice for adding year-round beauty to shaded garden spaces.
