If youre looking for a rugged survivor that brings a lush, vibrant energy to your landscape, the Elephant Bush (Portulacaria afra) is your new best friend. This versatile succulent is a powerhouse of resilience, easily reaching 3 to 5 feet tall in the garden, where its reddish stems and emerald leaves create a striking “miniature tree” effect. Its a sun-worshiper through and through, performing its best in full, direct sun to light shade, making it ideal for those hot, bright spots where other plants might wilt. The real magic, however, lies in its toughness; while it’s a favorite snack for elephants in its native South Africa, our local deer and rabbits typically steer clear of its fleshy foliage. Its the ultimate “set it and forget it” plant for busy gardeners who want architectural beauty and drought tolerance without the constant battle against garden critters.
