Actinidia deliciosa ‘Jenny,’ commonly known as kiwi fruit ‘Jenny,’ is a vigorous deciduous climber that can reach up to 6 meters in height. It features large, heart-shaped leaves with red-tipped edges. This variety produces small clusters of white flowers in early summer, followed by hairy, brown, egg-sized fruits in late summer or early autumn. This specific cultivar is self-fertile, meaning it doesn’t require a pollination partner to set fruit, and typically starts fruiting within three years of planting. In the UK, kiwi fruit can be cultivated successfully when grown against a south-facing wall to provide maximum shelter from prevailing winds. They are known for their heavy cropping, particularly in the southern regions, and are great for covering walls, fences, or pergolas. When conditions are favorable, a mature vine can yield up to 13.6 kg (30 lb) of fruit. Freshly picked kiwi fruits from the vine have a deliciously sweet taste and higher nutrient content compared to imported fruits. They are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Growing tips for kiwi fruit include planting in fertile, well-drained soil. Kiwi plants are sensitive to adverse weather conditions, so it’s advisable to plant them in a sunny spot against a wall or garden fence, as they thrive in such locations. Given their climbing nature, they require space and should ideally be planted 3-4.5 meters (10-15 feet) apart. Container-grown kiwi fruit plants are available for dispatch throughout the year, making them more accessible for cultivation. In summary, Actinidia deliciosa ‘Jenny’ is a hardy, self-fertile kiwi cultivar with attractive foliage, white flowers, and delicious egg-shaped fruits. Optimal growth is achieved in sunny, sheltered locations against walls or fences with fertile, well-drained soil.
