Planting early summer raspberries like ‘Malling Promise’ in your garden can be a rewarding choice for several reasons:
Early Harvest: Early summer raspberries typically bear fruit earlier in the season compared to other varieties. ‘Malling Promise’ specifically produces a bumper crop of tasty fruits early in the summer. This means you’ll get to enjoy fresh, homegrown raspberries earlier than other varieties, extending your harvest season.
Fruit Quality: The berries produced by ‘Malling Promise’ are noted to be plump, large, firm, and flavorsome. This makes them excellent for fresh eating straight from the garden. The quality of the fruit can also be ideal for making jams, desserts, or other culinary uses.
Disease Resistance: ‘Malling Promise’ is known for its excellent disease resistance. This attribute can reduce the need for extensive pesticide use or other interventions, making it a more low-maintenance choice compared to some other raspberry varieties.
Soil Tolerance: This raspberry variety has a reputation for tolerating poor soils, which can be advantageous if your garden soil isn’t ideal. As long as the soil is fertile and well-drained, ‘Malling Promise’ can thrive, giving gardeners more flexibility in planting locations.
Sun Requirements: It prefers full sun, which is often more readily available and conducive to healthy plant growth and fruit production.
Versatile Use: The fruits from ‘Malling Promise’ raspberries have good longevity when frozen, allowing you to enjoy the harvest for an extended period by preserving them for later use in frozen form.
Overall, ‘Malling Promise’ offers a combination of early harvest, good fruit quality, disease resistance, soil tolerance, and versatility in use, making it an attractive choice for gardeners looking to grow raspberries.
