Italian Oregano is a robust culinary herb cultivated primarily for the intense, peppery flavour found in its aromatic leaves. This potent savoury taste, which is sharper and more pungent than sweet marjoram, is released by crushing the leaves or drying them for long-term storage. It is traditionally used as a staple seasoning in Mediterranean cuisine, particularly for pizza sauces, pasta dishes, and grilled meats, where its bold profile stands up well to heat.

This plant is typically grown as a hardy, low-mounding perennial that spreads gently to cover the ground. It is tough and cold-tolerant, often remaining semi-evergreen in mild climates. For optimal results and the strongest essential oils, plant it in a location with full sun exposure. It is drought-tolerant and must have well-drained, gritty soil, as it thrives in dry conditions and dislikes sitting in heavy, wet earth.
