Thyme Common is a staple culinary herb cultivated widely for the earthy, savoury flavour found in its tiny, dark green leaves. This robust taste, which retains its potency even after long, slow cooking, is released when the woody stems are added to stocks, stews, and casseroles. It is traditionally used as a key component of a bouquet garni and is essential for seasoning roast chicken and root vegetables, offering a warm, aromatic depth that complements hearty dishes perfectly.

This plant is typically grown as a hardy, low-growing evergreen shrub that forms a neat mound, making it ideal for edging paths or planting in rockeries. It is extremely tough and frost-tolerant, providing structure in the garden year-round. For the best results and most concentrated oils, plant it in a location with full sun. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and demands poor, gritty, free-draining soil, as it will rot quickly if left in damp, waterlogged ground.
