Rheum hybridum ‘Timperley Early’ is a rhubarb variety prized for its early harvest, suitable for forcing and producing outdoor rhubarb from February/March to October. Key characteristics and growing tips include:

Description:

Harvest Time: Can be harvested as early as February, making it one of the earliest rhubarb varieties.
Stalk Color: Succulent red-based pink stems transition to light green with red freckling.
Flavor: Exhibits a very good and delicious sweet flavor.
Leaves: Attractive and atrovirens (dark green), but leaves contain high oxalic acid and should not be consumed.
Growing Tips:

Site Selection: Choose an open, sunny site with moist, well-draining soil, avoiding frost-prone areas.
Harvesting: Refrain from harvesting in the first year to allow for establishment and maintain plant vigor.
Mulching: Apply an annual mulch of well-rotted compost or manure to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and add nutrients.
Avoid Moving: Once planted, avoid moving rhubarb plants to prevent disruption to their deep root system.
Forcing: Timperley Early is suitable for forcing. Cover crowns with an opaque pot to exclude light, stimulating early growth for a tender, early harvest.
By following these tips, you can successfully cultivate Timperley Early rhubarb, enjoying its early harvest and delicious flavor. Caution is advised with the leaves due to their oxalic acid content.
