Tricyrtis hirta, commonly known as the Japanese toad lily, is a shade-loving perennial native to Japan. Characterised by its upright, arching stems and lance-shaped, dark green leaves, this cultivar forms dense clumps that provide structure and texture throughout the growing season. From late summer through to early autumn, it produces clusters of star-shaped, white flowers adorned with purple spots and a yellow throat, creating a striking display that attracts pollinators and adds visual interest to mixed beds or containers.

Ecologically, ‘Tricyrtis hirta’ is beneficial to pollinators, particularly bees, which are drawn to its abundant, nectar-rich flowers. It thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and is adaptable to various light conditions, including partial to full shade. This cultivar is hardy in UK gardens and is well-suited for borders, woodland edges, or containers. Its compact size and prolonged flowering period make it an excellent choice for adding vertical interest and supporting local wildlife.
