The Valentine rhubarb (Rheum hybridum ‘Valentine’) is a reliable, heavy-yielding perennial grown for its tender, deep red stems and excellent flavour. Known for producing long, slender stalks with a sweet, rich taste and minimal acidity, it is a popular choice for both home gardens and allotments. Its large, heart-shaped green leaves and vibrant red stems make it an attractive and productive plant that stands out in any kitchen garden.

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, Valentine rhubarb prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It benefits from a generous layer of organic mulch in spring to retain moisture and enrich the soil. Once established, it produces abundant crops from late spring into early summer. Stems should be harvested by gently pulling rather than cutting, leaving a few to sustain the plants growth. Removing flower stalks as they appear helps direct energy back into stem production.

A low-maintenance, hardy variety, Valentine rhubarb provides reliable yields year after year and adds visual appeal to the garden. Its bold foliage gives a lush, architectural look, while its flowers, if left to bloom, can attract beneficial insects.
